Dakota Andersen’s debut album, Switchgrass, is a collection of original songs largely inspired by nature that spans a multitude of vocal jazz styles. Just as switchgrass itself is linked to other plants of its kind through an interconnected and expansive root system, so too are the songs on this album - each track lives distinctly within its own subgenre, yet is also grounded in the jazz tradition. Featuring a heavy-hitting lineup of local Twin Cities musicians - Ben Ehrlich, Dan Carpel, Stephanie Wieseler, Ethan Ostrow, Ernest Bisong, Jackson Peters, and Rachel Bearinger - this album is sure to captivate listeners through the ensemble's dynamic playing and Dakota's thoughtful compositions.
Recorded April 12 & 13, 2025 at Greenway Recording, Minneapolis, MN. Mixed by Mason Meyers, mastered by Kevin Feidt, art by Emily Olson, digital distribution & CD production by CD Baby, vinyl production by Outta Wax.

I'll be joining UNI's Jazz Band One under the direction of Mike Conrad for their fall concert, which features guest artist Levi Saelua and his music. The program will include Paul Lichty's big band arrangement of my song "Be Kind," Saelua's Shadows of Manzanar (a new 4-movement suite based on the WWII internment experience Saelua's family), and more. Information on Saelua's suite can be found here: https://www.colossuswest.com/shadowofmanzanar
